Leopoldo André Canal Almeida
Founding partner of the firm, he practices Public Law with an emphasis on Tax Law, International Tax Law, and Immigration Law. He served as an advisor to the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro and as a legislative advisor to the Rio de Janeiro City Council. He also served as legal counsel to the Union of Transportation and Logistics Companies of Rio de Janeiro — SINDICARGA — and was an Alternate State Deputy of Rio de Janeiro from 2018 to 2022. He has taught law at several institutions, including the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police Academy — ACADEPOL, the Dom João VI School for Senior Officers of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police — PMERJ, and the PMERJ Training and Professional Development Center for Enlisted Personnel — CFAP. He has also taught in the postgraduate Public Law program at Universidade Estácio de Sá, among other institutions.
Education
He pursued doctoral and master’s studies in Legal Sciences at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa in Portugal, as well as a Professional Master’s degree in Management and Tax Accounting at FUCAPE Business School. He was also a Visiting Scholar in the Doctoral Program in Constitutional Law at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He holds a specialization in U.S. Federal Taxation and International Transactions from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States, in addition to having completed international taxation programs at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He also holds postgraduate degrees in State Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro — UERJ — and in Civil Procedure from Universidade Candido Mendes — UCAM. He has completed extension studies in Tax Law at Fundação Getulio Vargas — FGV; in Civil Procedure at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro — PUC-Rio; in International Tax Law and in Law and International Relations, both at the Center for International Law of Minas Gerais — CEDIN; and in Tax Law and Constitutional Law, both at the Brasiliense Institute of Public Law — IDP.
